After the US Justice Department reversed its position on the legality of non-sports online gambling by admitting that the Wire Act applies only to sports betting, some of the US states are expected to re-double their efforts to legalize intrastate internet gambling.

Bills have either been presented to the legislature or are being drafted in states such as California, Florida and Iowa; Nevada has just passed regulation and is currently accepting licenses for online poker, and New Jersey will take the second attempt to pass its iGaming bill that was vetoed in March 2011 by Governor Christie, due to its legal unclarity.

Senator Raymond Lesniak, author of the NJ iGaming bill is a long-standing proponent of revitalising the Atlantic City casino industry by allowing sportsbetting and online gambling and thus creating a gaming technology hub in New Jersey. One of his most recent successes is the passage of the sportsbetting bill that challenges the federal law. The bill was just signed on January 18 by the governor.

Busted by this success, Lesniak is now determined to push his efforts to get the iGaming bill passed and signed. This time around he might be successful as Governor Christie, following the favourable DoJ ruling, changed his stance and has already given his support for it.

Senator Lesniak will address the audience of the world’s largest offline/online gaming exhibition, ICE Totally Gaming, taking place in London between January 24th and 26th, to give his take on the impact of the DoJ decision on the New Jersey efforts and to outline his plans and timelines for legal iGaming in his home state.

The keynote address will be delivered via internet connection on Thursday, 26 January, to a group of high-profile European and US delegates to ICE, also involved as speakers or sponsors of the 12th Global iGaming Summit & Expo (GiGse), that meets later this year on April 24-26 in San Francisco, CA to discuss business opportunities arising from the potential regulation of internet gaming in the USA. The GiGse meeting will host top level executives from companies such as bwin.party, Virgin Games, Caesars, PokerStrategy, Foxwoods, Mohegan Tribe, San Manuel Bingo & Casino, IGT and is sponsored by GiGse and Jon Porter Gordon Silver Communications.

Senator Lesniak’s speech at ICE will then be broadcast on the same day, Thursday, January 26 at 2:00 pm, to the entire ICE audience via the screens located at the front of Earls Court 1 and on the balcony level.
