While doing some research for some clients on Digital consumption habits and reading the Comscore report -  Digital Omnivores: How Tablets, Smartphones and Connected Devices are Changing U.S. Digital Media - I came across some interesting facts – an excellent report of which you can download it for free from Comscore.

For example a near 500 million Smartphones units shipped in 2011 – so what is significant about that – aside for the growth it was the tactile element of the touch screen that really intrigued me on many levels…

Znyga Inc Losses of $435 million is this the ‘death knell’ for social betting or gaming?

Znyga Inc announced on Tuesday losses that were reported at $435 million.

This had an immediate affect on the share price but has since recovered some of the intital downturn.

After the US Justice Department reversed its position on the legality of non-sports online gambling by admitting that the Wire Act applies only to sports betting, some of the US states are expected to re-double their efforts to legalize intrastate internet gambling.

Bills have either been presented to the legislature or are being drafted in states such as California, Florida and Iowa; Nevada has just passed regulation and is currently accepting licenses for online poker, and New Jersey will take the second attempt to pass its iGaming bill that was vetoed in March 2011 by Governor Christie, due to its legal unclarity.

Not a day passes by when the talk at tradeshows or at the office in the egambling industry or indeed any other industry sector turns to the topic or new buzz word including  ‘social’  in its sentence construct or the huge valuations and money raised in various IPO’s of any socially termed business.

Indeed and I suspect that the Totally Ice Gaming Show which heralds in a new year for the industry shall reverberant with new and inexplicable social terminology – watch this space.  It is everywhere and is consuming every waking thought and perhaps in their nightmares as well, of CEO’s, investors, agencies, technologists and marketers alike with jargon such as social networks, social media, social CRM, player social graph and the latest hyperbolic term social gamification – so are you social or antisocial towards betting?

As another year unfolds, I am often asked by clients, friends and peers what will be the next big innovation in the i-gaming and gambling industry.
